Virginia Gayle Madsen, born September 11, 1961, is an American actress. Her debut film was in Class (1983), which was shot in her hometown of Chicago. After moving to Los Angeles, director David Lynch cast her as the princess Irulan in the science-fiction film Dune (1984). Madsen starred in several popular teen films, including Electric Dreams (1984), Modern Girls ( 1986), and Fire with Fire (1986). Madsen was also recognized for her role in Helen Lyle, the main character in the horror film Candyman (1992). Madsen won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Alexander Payne’s comedy-drama Sideways (2004).
